Ultra HT Fire Protection - Saving Homes One Roof at a Time
Over 60,000 U.S. communities and approximately 44 million homes face heightened wildfire risks when residing in what is termed Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) areas. A WUI designation describes where human development meets with undeveloped wildlands. These increased fire risks result from homes being situated where forest fires, brush and grass fires move very quickly. As the population continues to grow and expand, WUI areas grow by approximately 2 million acres per year according to the U.S. Forest Service.
Ways to Combat Fire Damage
One way to help protect a structure from fire damage is through fire-rated building materials. Many times, WUI fires start on a building’s roof where burning debris and hot embers in the air fall on the structure. Installing a Class A fire-rated roof covering is the first line of defense. These can include asphalt shingles, metal roofing panels, and clay or concrete tiles that carry a Class A designation.
The next step is to build a roof assembly that is also rated Class A. That’s where MFM comes into play. Our Ultra HT Wind & Water Seal® underlayment, when used in combination with a Class A roof covering, provides additional protection from fire spreading into the building structure itself.
Ultra HT® Fire Designations
Ultra HT® has a variety of fire ratings in addition to our WUI Listing 8180-2433:0001. The product has also been third-party, independently tested to ASTM E108 for use with architectural or standard 3-tab asphalt shingles. For metal roofing applications, Ultra HT® carries a UL 790 listing, TGFU R11672. Complete assembly requirements for each are located on the Ultra HT® Installation Instructions.
Ultra HT Wind & Water Seal® is a 45-mil, self-adhering roofing underlayment designed for use with most roofing systems. The product features a cool white, cross-laminated polyethylene film surface with a specially formulated traction coating laminated to a high temperature SBS adhesive rated to 250°F. The product is available in a finished roll size of 36” x 67’ and offers a 10-year warranty. Specific product information is on the Ultra HT® Technical Data Sheet.
